ASCE Steel Bridge 2

The steel bridge design team will design a required steel bridge to compete as a combined team at the 2013 Pacific Southwest ASCE Regional competition on April 4-6, 2013.  The event will take place at Loyola Marymount University.

Introduction

The steel bridge design team offers a detailed scope of services providing the technical activities for development of the 2013 ASCE Steel Bridge Competition project.  Input was obtained from technical advisor, Thomas Nelson, and client, Dr. Joshua Hewes, in order to determine the best approach to the problem.

The scope of service

Task 1  Project Management
Task 2  Design Research
Task 3  Analyze & Select Design
Task 4  Steel Procurement & Fabrication
Task 5  2013 ASCE/AISC Steel Bridge Competition
Task 6  2013 Undergraduate Symposium

Stakeholders

The design team has determined the stakeholders for this project to be the following: NAU ASCE Club, Dr. Hewes, and the steel bridge team members.  The NAU ASCE Club will benefit through participation and recognition from the National American Society of Civil Engineers Branch.  Dr. Hewes is the client for this project and all final bridge designs will be approved of by him.  Steel bridge team members will gain a greater knowledge through application of skills obtained from their curriculum at Northern Arizona University.

Technical Information

The bridge will be designed as a cantilever passageway bridge.  The length of the decking support surface must be no more than 17 ft. The bridge must be at least 1 ft. 7in but not more than 5ft. above the surface of the ground or river.  The minimum inner edges and maximum outer edges of the two decking support surfaces are 2 ft. 6 in. and 3 ft. 2in., respectively, measured perpendicular to the span of the bridge and no more than 3 ft. above the surface of the river or ground.  This vertical clearance is required under the bridge at all points except directly over the foundation easements.  A vehicle passageway clearance of at least 1 ft. 6 in. tall and 3 ft. 8in. wide must completely traverse the bridge from end to end.
